Playa Honda is a quiet Spanish village at the southern end of the Mar Menor in southeast Murcia. It has a supermarket, a few local bars and a beach café. There are tennis courts, karting and horse riding in the area along with excellent walking and cycling in the nearby Sierra Espuna National Park and the Sierra de Carrascoy Mountains.
The village is right on the shore of the Mar Menor, a shallow lagoon with calm warm waters which are ideal for safe bathing and swimming. It is popular for sailing dinghies, windsurfing and other watersports. There are also a number of diving schools as there are excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities in the area. The superb soft sands make this a popular place for family vacations and quieter coves can also be found further along the Mediterranean coast.
Playa Honda is just short drive from La Manga Club which is a superb luxury resort with excellent amenities. It has three championship golf courses, a tennis academy, football training facility, a luxury health spa and a choice of restaurants which are all open to the public. The area also has several more excellent golf courses.
The area around Playa Honda has many markets which sell handbags, leather goods, local pottery, fresh fruit and vegetables which can all be haggled over. Fresh fish can be bought at the nearby harbour or enjoyed in the local restaurants at Mar de Cristal, Los Belones and Cabo de Palos. La Manga Strip is lined with shops, bars and restaurants which offer a lively nightlife.
A trip to the historic city of Murcia makes a great day out. It has excellent shopping, museums and wonderful architecture in its Cathedral and government buildings, many of which have recently been restored. Concepcion Castle can be toured and has great views across the city and the old port where naval ships, fishing boats and leisure yachts can all be seen.
